Two figures stood close together looking over the celebrations from the roof top. With only five minutes
before the new millennium, the festivities were breaking out all over town.
Standing under the bright stars, he gently took her hand and they leant over to watch the crowds below.
People were dancing in the streets to the music that was booming out across the land.
Colourful paper was thrown and wine bottles opened as the moment drew nearer and nearer. He started to
feel a little uneasy.
He tentatively started to pull something from his belt. It was a small box, containing within it what he
hoped would soon belong to the most important person in his life.
In the final few minutes, she turned to take his hand, but was surprised to find him looking tense and
nervous.
Whats wrong?
N, nothing. I, I just have something to ask you...
She tilted her head to one side and waited, a smile creeping across her face as she looking into the eyes of
the one she loved most.
As the final minute was entered before the start of the next century, he gathered his courage together and
uttered the words he had practiced saying for the last few weeks.
Will you do me the honour of, marrying me?
She didnt reply at first, and just stood there with her expression frozen.
He started to panic, what is she said no?! He had wanted this for so long now, since the birth of their
daughter.
He started to fantasies what he would do if she said no. He would have to leave, he knew he wouldnt be
able to stay if the feelings he had for her werent shared. He felt a small bead of sweat break out on his
forehead.
People down below started to count down to the new year with joy. Only ten seconds to go, and each
second seemed like a lifetime.
As the crowds got down to five, her smile became wider as what he had said finally hit her. He had asked
her to marry him. He wanted to spend the rest of his life with her.
She had dreamed about this for over a year now. She had longed for him to make the final commitment,
and here he was, proposing to her.
She gave no reply in words, but as the crowd started cheering in the new year, she reached across and
kissed him passionately.
On the rooftops of New York City, at the dawn of the new century, he slipped the ring onto her finger and
they pledged their eternal devotion to each other.
